James ‘Chilli’ Cheal Shaper Interview + Mid Strength Design

Varuna Surfboards Shaper Interview Series with James ‘Chilli’ Cheal reveals how a high performance board builder has put his trust in our hollow wooden surfboard technology for performance, strength, flex and positive impact.

The question we get asked the most is, do Varuna surfboards perform? And when James tested and approved the very first prototype of his Chilli Mid Strength we knew there was no denying it.

When James starts referencing Andy, Hedgey and Coleborn when describing the performance of his designs and how it translates to Varuna technology we just sit on the floor and take it all in.

Varuna Surf Youtube is loaded with Chilli interviews, board breakdowns and reviews from likes of Margo and Jared Mell. Below are all the links you need.

Chilli - Mid Strength
from $1,695.00

The Chilli Mid Strength is designed for Waves 2 - 6ft.

What sets the Mid Strength apart is its cleverly designed curvy outline and rocker combination, which prevents it from feeling overly long and straight, a common characteristic of many mid-length boards. Instead, it surfs like a significantly shorter board, making it more versatile and user-friendly, all in the spirit of sustainable performance surfing. Riding it is an experience that will undoubtedly transform your surfing outings.

James (Chilli) conceived this surfboard during the summer of 2018/19, a time when he was dealing with a nagging knee injury that limited his ability to perform at his best on a standard shortboard. His goal was simple: create a board that excelled in easy paddling, wave-catching, and effortless surfing, all while championing sustainable performance surfing. Thus, the Mid Strength was born.

If your physical fitness isn’t at its peak, or perhaps your time in the surf has become more limited, there comes a point where you might appreciate a surfboard that can make the experience more accessible. The Mid Strength board is purpose-built to ease your paddling and wave-catching efforts, especially in the higher wave range, all while maintaining a commitment to sustainable performance surfing.
