Varuna Launches Flagship Stores in Canggu, Bali and Byron Bay, Australia

Five years after the idea of Varuna performance hollow wooden surfboards was conceived we’ve launched two stores, Varuna Bali and Varuna Byron Bay.

It’s taken five years to perfect our hollow wooden surfboard technology so that the performance is as close to a standard PU as possible without any foam. We’re so grateful to the shapers that have worked with us to test, adjust and tweak the Varuna technology on this journey. Special thanks to Maurice Cole, Joel Fitzgerald, Renaud Cardinal, Stuart D’Arcy, Beau Young and James Chilli Cheal for your commitment and trusting us with your designs.

At the end of October we opened the doors of Varuna Bali at 120 Jl. Pantai Pererenan. Bali, 80351. Indonesia.

We were stoked that some of our shapers were able to fly in for the launch of our flagship Varuna store along with residents like Jared Mell also making an appearance to support. The crowd filled the shop, spilled out onto the street and across the road to the Baked Cafe area where we blew up a silver screen and premiered Sticks and Stones, a film shot at Jeffreys Bay, South Africa by Peter Baker and produced by Maurice Cole.

Thanks to the legends that made this possible and special thanks to Island Brewing for the cold beers and Bocas Tacos for the deliciously fresh Mexican.

Varuna Seed to Surfboard

Bali Belly Magazine covered the event and had this to say.

Last Saturday Varuna Surf welcomed the community into their impressive new flagship store located in Pererenan! Their full range of ethical and sustainable surfboards were on display, with several of their shaper-collaborators present including Maurice Cole, Joel Fitz, and Beau Young. Guests were treated to complimentary tacos and beers while their latest surf film featuring Bang Bang Boogie & Kayu Vianna in South Africa premiered to hoots and whistles from the crowd! Drop by the store to learn more about what Varuna is up to!

In early December we went back to back and launched the Varuna Byron Bay store into the rainbow region at 3/16 Tasman Way, Byron Bay Industrial Estate

There’s magic in this Byron Bay community and we appreciated the support as we strive to make the surf industry more sustainable. Again the support of our shapers was unbelievable; Joel Fitzgerald, Beau Young and Jared Mell were able to make the trip for the launch.

Varuna Byron Bay Launch Event

The crowd were surprised to see Beau Young out of the shaping bay and onto stage as he played an unreal set on a range of guitars as the prelude to a film he also starred in. Our space in the Byron Industrial Area neighbours Dom at Image Music Vision and his full cinema size projector screen in the carpark. Thanks to Dom who ran the audio visual on the night and pulled off a screening of Sticks and Stones for the Australian Premiere and a world premiere of Pendulum Swing our latest film featuring Beau Young and Jared Mell as they spend 3 days in Bali testing the first Varuna Longboards designed by Beau Young.

Special thanks to the local businesses who contributed to the event. Earth Brewing for the frosty beers poured by the legends at Kombi Keg Byron Bay and complemented deliciously by Stefano’s Pizza

Varuna Bali and Varuna Byron Bay are open 7 days. We are exclusive Demo Centres so have a range of boards from 5’4 to 10’ available for you to come and test free of charge. Our boards suit all conditions and all surf styles so come and say hello.
